After the sack of Rome, in 410AD, Ravenna became the center of the Western Roman Empire; situated on the Adriatic Sea, it was already an important Roman naval base. In 476AD, it was invaded by the Goths, but they were also Christian and continued the embellishment started by the Romans.
By the mid-6^th century, it was again annexed, but this time by the eastern empire of Byzantium and it is the legacy of these three empires that make it such an incredible city to visit. Here, you will see not ruins, but whole buildings, fantastically adorned with mosaics. In the little San Vitale, are a set of mosaics that are generally acknowledged to be the crowning achievement of Byzantine art extant anywhere in the world. This is but one, there are no fewer than eight buildings listed by UNESCO as being world heritage buildings.

Sarande is a port town located on the southern end of Albania surrounded by spectacularly crystal clear water beaches that are suprisingly uncrowded and perfect for a lazy day in the sun. The area around Viterbo, north of Rome, became a retreat for popes and cardinals during troubled times in Rome. Happily for us, they have left a legacy of beautiful villas and gardens, designed in one of Italy’s finest periods, the Renaissance and consequently models for the rest of Europe to copy. One of the finest villas is the Palazzo Farnese at Caprarola, a huge edifice, standing at the top of the town’s steep main street. Surrounding the palace are two magnificent gardens, a south-facing summer terrace and an east-facing winter terrace, each with appropriate plants and design. After lunch in a traditional local restaurant (not included), you will visit the Villa Lante in Bagnaia, another splendid Renaissance palace and built by Vignola, the architect of the Palazzo Farnese and considered to be his finest creation. The final visit of the day will be to the Sacro Bosco di Bomarzo, the sacred Bomarzo wood, otherwise known as the monster Park; it consists of the most amazing and often bizarre sculptures, many carved from the local rock, scattered through the woods.
