20-night Crossing Oceania Cruise: Fiji to Bali

Lautoka is sited in the western side of Viti Levu, the largest island in Fiji, and approximately 250 km from Suva, the capital. The city is surrounded with the blue Pacific Ocean on the western side and green gold sugar cane together with pine trees on the other sides. This side of the island is more diverse. One of the prime shopping areas nearby is the town of Nadi.

The second-most-populous island, "Santo," as local residents call it, contains many reminders of World War II. Luganville, located on the southeast coast, is a somewhat sleepy city these days, but during World War II it was a huge U.S. military supply center. Many of the Quonset huts erected then are still in use. The city's market is a great source for local souvenirs.

Divers and snorkelers have much to explore around Santo. The island is dotted with freshwater blue holes and lagoons that are ideal for snorkelers. Divers can descend to the wreck of the 654-ft/199-m troop transport President Coolidge (sunk during World War II) and can penetrate the interior of the wreck to gaze at a mural featuring a lady and a unicorn. Another good place for divers and snorkelers is Million Dollar Point on the southeast corner of the island. It's where the U.S. Army dumped tons of supplies at the end of the war—we were amazed by the sight of literally thousands of bottles of Coca-Cola and 7-Up sitting among the Jeeps, bulldozers and other war material on the sea floor. For beach lovers, we recommend the sandy strips at Champagne Beach and Palikulo Point. 200 mi/320 km north of Efate.

Port Vila is located around a magnificent natural harbour offering stunning views of Iririki and Ifira islands. It is Vanuatu's international gateway and remains the only town on the island. Vila is a pretty town. Clean and uncluttered, the waterfront area is so unpolluted, visitors are stunned to look down from the seawall and see live corals and tropical fish. It's also fast becoming known as the gourmet capital of the South Pacific. Though there is little night life in Vila except at the Resort Hotels, there is a nightclub (Flamingo), a friendly casino (at Le Meridien Resort), a movie theatre (French only) and some restaurants which often feature local or imported musicians. Best of all, Vila is a safe and hassle free environment. Stroll along the waterfront or darkened back streets late at night, and passing locals are likely to wish you a soft "Good night", or perhaps strike up a friendly conversation.

Known as the "Happy Isles," the Solomons are one of the best-kept secrets in the Pacific. These are islands of great natural beauty from jungle-clad peaks and active volcanoes to dashing waterfalls, misty rainforests, turquoise lagoons, and brilliant coral reefs. In Honiara, backstreet quonset huts and an occasional, rusty wreckage provide grim reminders of World War II; over 25,000 Japanese and American soldiers were killed or wounded on Guadalcanal. Honiara has been the capital of the Solomon Islands since Tulagi was devastated during World War II.

Alotau is the capital of Milne Bay province, a province of Papua new Guinea.  Renowned for its friendly people and amazing tropical islands, it is a very well kept secret and sees very few tourists each year. The whole of Milne bay offers some of the worlds best scuba diving and coral reef experiences.

Samarai Island is located in the China Strait located in Milne Bay, the easternmost inlet on the coast of Papua New Guinea, and gives good access to coral reefs and diving. The Bay has plantations on its south and west shores while the north shore is steep and rugged.

• During your half-day adventure, you’ll take an approximately 30 minute moderately active trek through the dry, tropical grasslands to a viewing point for a look at these massive creatures, later, you’ll cool off in the sparkling waters of nearby Pink Beach.

Benoa (Tanjung Benoa) is a modern Balinese resort - a government-run dreamland of coconut palms, white sand beaches and pristine waters located near the island's southernmost tip. Geologically, the area is quite different from the rest of Bali, and even from the rest of the Bukit peninsula upon which it rests. Instead of rice fields or limestone cliffs, there is sandy soil reaching down to a long, sandy beach protected by a reef. Coconut trees are everywhere.
