The gateway to the Golden Isles is a sleepy town not quite awake to the tourism potential of its antique houses, palms, flowering shrubs, and moss-draped live oaks. Brunswick has always been an important port, with a natural harbor that can handle oceangoing ships. Today you'll find a large fleet of shrimp boats -- the town bills itself as the "shrimp capital of the world." Jekyll Island was the winter home of America's rich and famous for 56 years. Vanderbilts and Rockefellers, Morgans and Astors, Macys, Pulitzers, and Goodyears all closed their Fifth Avenue mansions and retreated to the serenity of this island.

About 80 mi/130 km south of Savannah, St. Simons Island is the largest of Georgia's four "Golden Islands," with plenty of options for golf, sand and sun stretched out over its 18 sq mi/46 sq km.
